Why I Chose Employee Ownership – A Personal Note

In October, Michael A Fox Associates Ltd (MAF Associates) formally entered into an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).
For me, this was a significant and very personal milestone.
I’ve worked in the construction industry for over 40 years, having started work at the age of 12. Like many people of my generation, I learned the industry from the ground up – on site, through experience, mistakes, responsibility, and ultimately leadership. MAF was built over decades of hands-on involvement, long client relationships, and a firm belief that professional integrity matters.
Reaching this point prompted some honest reflection.
Stepping Back – But Not Walking Away
It was time for others within the business to step forward and become the leaders of what I genuinely believe is a great company.
The move into employee ownership allows exactly that to happen – without selling the business, diluting its values, or handing control to external investors who don’t understand what we do or why we do it the way we do.
That said, this is not a retirement story.
I remain very much involved in the business and continue to act as a focal point for sales, client relationships, and strategic support. Many of our long-standing clients still know me personally, and maintaining those trusted relationships is something I care deeply about.
Why Employee Ownership Felt Right
Employee ownership felt like the natural evolution of the company.
It allows:
- The people who have helped build MAF to share in its future
- The business to remain independent and professionally led
- Decisions to be made for the long term, not short-term gain
- Our culture and standards to be protected
Most importantly, it ensures continuity – for clients, staff, and projects that often span many years.
A New Chapter – Personally and Professionally
On a personal level, this change also gives me balance.
I now split my time between my homes in the UK and Cyprus, which allows me to step back from day-to-day operational pressures while still contributing where my experience adds the most value – client engagement, mentoring, and strategic thinking.
It’s a different rhythm, but one that suits both me and the business at this stage.
Looking Ahead
MAF is now led by a strong management team, supported by experienced professionals across surveying, fire engineering, and consultancy services. My role is to support them, open doors, maintain relationships, and help guide the company through the next phase of its development.
Employee ownership is not about change for the sake of it.
It’s about doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons.
I’m proud of what we’ve built – and equally proud of the people who will now take it forward.
